Stand-Up Comedy? Has it had it's day?
I don't know what it is... maybe I'm just too tired these days to care; but my most recent viewings of stand up comedians fails to produce the laughs it once would have.
I suspect it's something more though. At first I thought it was just Aziz Ansari's high pitched nasal whining that put me off, or the unfunny subject matter (jokes about molestation?) but no. It's just not funny to me anymore.
It's formulaic. It's practically all been done before. Even if it's "new", it's not. It's just another version of the same droning on about unrealistic situations, pitched to an audience that has to be a little brain dead... or need to justify their presence (perhaps the entry cost) by laughing.
Even that sounds like canned laughter to be honest.
I don't know. I have a feeling that stand up comedy has had its day. Just like tap dancing movies have had their day, and spaghetti Westerns had their day. It's a form of entertainment that has grown stale. Or maybe I'm just older (and wiser?).
