The Advocate.
The word advocate can be used as both a noun and a verb and in some languages is the word for the word lawyer, solicitor, councilor or whatever other term there is for this role.
I was reminded of this by having to think about the example of justice attributed to the wisdom of Solomon. The case which involves possibly the most intense debate on ownership that humans could imagine.
The ownership of a child, an offspring which is contended by two mothers. The ruling was to destroy the child by cutting it in two. Perhaps with the sadistic idea of giving one half to each.
And the wisdom is thereby uncovered of the mother relinquishing the child with the thought that they would rather see the child live in the hands of an impostor... than to commit them to sure death, if the ruling is implemented.
But is that what a mother would really do? Would they give up a child to live in a world of iniquity and falsehood for a time? The mother's of Moses and Joseph might have thought of this question at some point perhaps.
So the advocate asks, is there a mother on earth who might rather the child dies than to be left in the hands of a liar.
For we have to remember that the mother has to lie herself and become the one she must despise surely.
Could she truly sell the truth for the survival of a child?
Perhaps this is the question that was asked of Abraham also. The survival of a child versus the agony of seeing one's own decision or action result in a future very different to the present.
Abraham distinguished himself by being ever true to the belief and faith in God that if the vision he saw was true then he would know it was for the Will of God that he was doing it. Not for himself or for the child. For The God.
That's why the story of the ultimately lying but genuine mother fails to impress me. I think the right thing is to always pursue the truth and accept and believe that The God will deliver the most righteous outcome (in this case the child) to you and not let it be sacrificed unjustly. That in effect is the story of Abraham and why following the path set for him is the one we should all strive to follow also.
